The Moto Guzzi LeMans III:
New addition - fairing lowers and a Comfy Chair!
The diagnosis so far:
Carbies need work; it came with a box full of fouled plugs, is drowning in fuel & fouls the next set of plugs in around 20 minutes. The chokes were adjusted permanently on, but fixing this only helped a bit - I've taken to carrying spare plugs & my socket set everywhere...
Tappet gaps had closed right up, I'm surprised it hadn't burned valves.
Timing was way off, both distributor alignment and point gap adjustment. All adjusted now, along with idle mixture; it ran beautifully for a day, then wouldn't idle at all the next day.
It rattles like a fiend. Given the above behaviour, I suspect a stuffed timing chain or adjuster, though the rattles could be partly top end too.
Fork Stanchions are rusting through the chrome and need either replacing or hitting with Devcon epoxy.
Fork air adjustment has gone west.
Steering damper has had it
I'm not so sure about the Agostini fairing, I'll put the lowers on at some point (after adjustment to let me keep the sidestand) & see how it looks. I suspect making some moulds off someone else's original fairing bits is more likely.
And the list goes on...
But geeze, in that hour or so it's been running properly so far, it was a little beauty. I'm beginning to see why the LeMans series became affectionately known as the Lemon series ;-)
All in all, a nice little project. Suggestions for modifications to make it better are welcome.
Carbie overhaul the first has now taken place. If you want to see how it's done, have a squiz here.
All went stop today. Problem identified here: Drive shaft failure
